This book is the result of an International Seminar on
"Gender, Work and Citizenship in the Countries of the Southern
Cone", held at Montevideo in September 2000 and organised by the
Sociology Department of the School of Social Sciences of the University
of the Republic, Uruguay, and the Unesco Chair of Culture for Peace
of the Montevideo Group Universities Association. The contents of the
volume elaborate on the challenge posed by the new paradigm of the Society
of Knowledge for these countries, in four chapters under the following
headings: I. Recent changes in labour markets and labour relations.
Inclusion and exclusion processes. II. Civil society, labour and exclusion.
III. Public policies of gender equality in employment. IV. Policies
and measures to promote equality of opportunities and results at work.
Progress and difficulties according to the actors involved.
With this volume we try to shed some
light on the research currently being carried out by universities of
different countries of the sub-region and at the same time make societies
aware of the exclusions generated by current transformations in the
realm of labour.
Men and women researchers from Argentina,
Chile, Brazil and Uruguay took part in a stimulating conceptual and
methodological debate about the inclusion / exclusion of women in labour
through a gender analysis, the links between the concepts of civic responsibily
and work were scrutinised, and several country experiences were analysed
regarding equality policies in employment. The views contributed by
a wide variety of social and political agents bore witness to the dialogue
and commitments in the search for gender policies in the world of labour.
