Ministries and SENAI signed agreements to train the unemployed

President of the Republic, Inácio Lula da Silva, during his visit to the Knowledge Olympics signed agreements with SENAI and other entities of the System S for the vocational preparation of the unemployed. A former student of SENAI São Paulo, where he was trained as a mechanic lathe operator in the early sixties, Lula had already attended the third edition of the event in 2004. According to Armando Monteiro Neto, president of the Confederação Nacional da Indústria (CNI), the presence of the President of the Republic was one of the highest moments of the event. "He shows a lot of appreciation for SENAI, he is a former student of the institution, he is familiar with the work done and he accompanies the effort of the entity's technicians to maintain the values that inspired the institution from the beginning and enabled it to be always renewed."

Young and adults - One of the agreements signed between the Ministry of Education and SENAI will enable young people from public schools to access vocational education. The agreement is part of the Teaching Programme for Youth and Adults (PROEJA). Another type of technical cooperation was agreed between SENAI and the Ministry of Labour and Employment. It plans to train five thousand workers from the Public Employment System from April and throughout this year.

Priority will be given to youth between 16 and 24 years old and people who are over 40 years old, women heads of family and people with disabilities. The goal is to insert 50 per cent of the people trained in the formal labour market. The rest will be guided to work as a freelance worker, "caring" entrepreneur, individual or cooperative entrepreneur. The first cities concerned will be Rio Branco, Recife, Betim (MG) and São Leopoldo (RS). Courses will be free of charge and they will address the specific needs of labour markets.

Another technical cooperation agreement will be signed between SENAI and the Ministry of Labour and Employment to carry out a diagnosis that will identify the real training demand in the naval industry sector of Pernambuco and Rio de Janeiro. Gathering these data will contribute to the definition of the Sectoral Plan on Naval Training that will be developed together with SENAI, among other vocational training institutions.
